Learning English With Video Games
Learning English With Video GamesThe most commonly used method of learning English is through learning English with video games. Through the medium of television and movies, children are exposed to a world where the only language spoken is English. However, if you were to watch the latest Disney movie 'Aladdin' to get your younger sibling involved in learning English, you might find yourself confused by the many different dialects that the film portrays. In fact, watching a story where the protagonist is in need of the help of an immigrant who speaks many different dialects can cause many children to think that they don't actually speak English at home. However, through the medium of video games, children are exposed to a different kind of language called 'Western.' 'Western' language does not have a distinct dialect, as it is a generic term for any language that is spoken in or around the US.Even the American accents in games that feature movies where English is spoken with an accent are different from the American accent. Instead of having an American accent, you will see more of a British accent instead. Furthermore, many American actors play British actors, as there are several American actors who actually live in the UK.The children watching these types of videos also learn English at the same time. It's an interesting method of learning English because children watching television have no idea how other people from other countries speak their language. Children who do learn to speak English by using this type of method are also doing something good for their own personal growth.Learning English with video games has the ability to encourage people who are already into gaming. Many video game developers today offer some type of bonus to players who buy their games. The main bonus given to gamers by these developers is that the children who buy their games are helping to create better versions of their games so that more people can enjoy the games that they a re playing. One of the games that are made by developers to help improve their games is one that teaches children the language used in their favorite video games. Many times, these children will be making it a goal to be able to speak English by the time they reach their teenage years. When they reach their teenage years, they are then able to get to the age when it is not too late for them to actually pursue their goal.Learning English with video games is a way to allow children to start off on a good path toward being fluent in their mother tongue. A variety of different programs are offered to allow children to become proficient in their mother tongue before they even attempt to learn English. Many of these courses can be found online as well, so it is very easy for children to start off by learning their mother tongue and then move onto the next step of trying to learn English.Although the majority of children who play video games for English are in their late teens, children fro m the early elementary grades can use these games to learn the language as well. Using video games as a means of teaching children a second language can help children succeed in life. It can also help make them better people because children who learn by playing games have proven to be smarter and more well-rounded individuals.

3 Innovative Foreign Language Dictionary Hacks for Every Stage of Learning
3 Innovative Foreign Language Dictionary Hacks for Every Stage of Learning 3 Innovative Foreign Language Dictionary Hacks for Every Stage of Learning A foreign language dictionary is an absolute essential, a basic language learning tool. But do you want to get some extra mileage out of it? Can you use it beyond looking up words you dont know when youre reading?Arent dictionaries just boring and utilitarian resources, especially when you have colorful, modern textbooks and shiny online lessons to go after?Dictionaries, both online and off, are great learning resources, even if they seem to be boring as all get out. And even that last bit wasnât at all accurateâ"modern dictionaries usually contain mini-grammar resources and phrasebooks alongside their other virtues. If youre learning an uncommon language, sometimes a dictionary and phrasebook are the only learning resources you have access to.It just takes a little creativity to make these massive sources of information work for you. Here are three dictionary hacks anyone can use! 3 Innovative Foreign Language Dictionary Hacks for Every Stage of Learning1. Beginner: Compi le Targeted Word Lists to Jumpstart Your VocabularyWhatâs cooler than creating your own personalized textbook? This is basically what Gabriel Wyner, author of Fluent Forever, proposes on his website. Through classes or basic textbooks, all language learners are expected to pick up basic vocabulary that addresses a travelerâs most pressing needs. These include such basic categories as animals, places, body parts, food, etc., and they can be broken down into thematic word lists.A word list is exactly what it sounds like. Itâs a categorically organized list of words for specific situations. The categories help you remember words used in similar situations, and this method of learning vocabulary (while a little rote) is great when you need to quickly learn something for immediate use. FluentU even allows users to create targeted word lists within its program. You may ask, what good does a word list do? Well, a word list does more than you think. Itâs both a starting point and a support for your other studies. The generally agreed-upon basic vocabulary categories are defined because those are the most basic things people need to understand and express. And, if youâre going traveling soon or want to start speaking the language as soon as possible, you can never underestimate the value of this vocabulary! Even if your grammar is lagging behind, Tarzan-speak combined with strategic gesturing can get you far. Here are some ideas for dictionaries and other resources to help you out!Gabriel Wynerâs guidelines for creating a basic vocabulary. Wynerâs method covers all of the basic categories and eventually leads you to compile word lists for 625 words. This is a lifesaver, especially if you donât have funds or other access to textbooks!WordReference is a multilingual dictionary great for a wide number of world languages.Jisho is an easy-to-use Japanese-English dictionary.iCIBA is a high-quality Chinese dictionary. If youâre learning a rarer language, try Lonely Planet phrasebooksâ"they come in a huge number of languages, including those with scarce online resources. The dictionaries in the back of the books are often extensive enough to outline your basic, necessary vocabulary, and the phrasebooks themselves are of excellent quality. I used one myself to learn decent Hebrew!2. Intermediate: Mine Sentences for Your SRSYou intermediate learners out there can get a lot more out of your bilingual dictionaries by using a spaced repetition system (SRS).An SRS is simply a computer-based flashcard program with a special twist. What makes SRS so special is its algorithm that predicts the rate of human memory decay. Iâm sure youâre all familiar with memorizing some phrases or grammar tables, only to forget them one, two or ten days later. SRS fixes that for you!For example, if you make a flashcard with gato on the front and cat on the back, and you guess the correct English answer, the program will wait several days until it s hows you the flashcard again. If you get it wrong, then it will show you the card again immediately, over and over, until you get it right. Then itâll show you the card one day later, with the time expanding as you become more confident in knowing the word. You end up reviewing difficult cards frequently and easy cards less frequently.FluentU contains its own SRS program that presents you with the vocabulary, phrases, expressions and grammar patterns youve been absorbing from videosâ"and the cards actually have clips from those videos on them. How cool is that? There are also independent SRS programs you could turn to such as Anki and Mnemosyne. As you can see, SRS has huge implications in learning foreign language vocabulary items. But whatâs this talk about sentences?Instead of entering a single target language word on the front of the card and its English translation on the back, you enter an entire sentence on the front, and the English translation (possibly with an explanat ion of unknown words) on the back. Crazy! I know! Why would someone do this? Why shatter the paradigm of learning individual words?Sentences provide you with context. Context is absolutely essential to efficient language learning. Context of a sentence, paragraph or book allows you to associate words with other things that you know, more so than learning a vocabulary word in isolation. Thats why FluentU shows you clips of real conversations or songsâ"the visual and aural context helps you remember the vocabulary items. In terms of grammar, SRS-ing sentences allows you to pick up grammar patterns that would ordinarily take a lot of memorization to learn. By seeing similar grammar patterns over and over, youâll pick them up naturally.Obviously, for sentence-focused SRS, youâll need to enter in a huge number of sentencesâ"in the thousands (Khatzumoto from All Japanese All The Time had 7000 sentences in his SRS by the time he was fluent in Japanese, and he recommends collecti ng 10,000 sentences!).Where do you find these sentences? Everywhere! You can get them from your textbooks, and, when youâre more advanced, from other media. Itâs clearly easier to mine sentences from written material, which is where your handy-dandy dictionary comes in.High-quality bilingual dictionaries contain example sentences for a word you want to learn, along with their English translations. It couldnât get easier! You enter these into your SRS, and youâre golden. Oftentimes, higher priced paper dictionaries work better for this, but here are some online foreign language dictionary resources you can use:WordReference, again. It has the most example sentences for Spanish and French, significantly fewer for German. Not so many for other European languages.Jisho has a lot of sample sentences for Japanese.iCIBA seems to have a lot of Chinese sample sentences, too.3. Advanced: Discover the Wonders of Monolingual DictionariesSo, youâve outgrown your bilingual dictionarie s, that translate everything neatly (perhaps too neatly) into English for you, and they just donât have the words or the cultural explanations youâre looking for. They keep shifting your brain into native language mode, which breaks up your immersion time. What to do, what to do?Two words: monolingual dictionaries. With these, you can understand the language using the language itself. Spanish words defined in Spanish, Chinese grammar explained in Chinese! You can dive into these when youâve reached the high-intermediate stage in terms of reading. I recommend making sure you can understand mainstream literature without heavy use of a dictionary or monolingual dictionaries will be tough. Reading through the definitions in monolingual dictionaries can take a little more time, and you might even find yourself looking up words in the definitions of those words. However, thats a quite effective way to keep growing your vocabulary with plenty of context, relevance and associations that your memory craves. You can SRS the example sentences from monolingual dictionaries, but you can also SRS the definitions. Letâs say you enter in a sentence, but youâre so advanced that you only need to define two words. You look them up in your monolingual dictionary and copy-paste both definitions. But wait! There are words in the definitions that you donât know! Define those words (embedded definitions) and youâre getting so much understandable language exposure itâs insane. When you start learning from monolingual dictionaries, your abilities improve rapidly. There are tons of good monolingual dictionaries online. Check these out:Word Reference Diccionario Español or the native Spanish-language dictionary by Real Academia Española are two great Spanish options.Larousse is ideal for French. The Free Dictionary offers a ton of world languages!Dictionaries are some of the cheapest, easiest-to-find language resources. And with these three hacks, your dictionaries will pa y for themselves several times overâ"even if theyre free!Cheap and useful dictionaries are cooler than you thought, huh?

Physics and Chemistry
Physics and ChemistryThere are a lot of different subjects you can study at University that will enable you to obtain a degree in a science. However, some of these subjects are quite hard to grasp and take time to study because they require real skills that not many people possess. If you are a student looking for an easy course to learn the basics of Physics and Maths, then you might consider joining a teaching and tutoring course for a couple of years so that you can build up your knowledge and the ability to teach without any problems. Most Physics and Maths teachers start their career by going through a teaching course. They then move onto a preparatory course that will prepare them for a teaching course. Once you have achieved the required qualifications, you can look for jobs in a university where you will be learning both Physics and Maths. You can also try to get a teaching certificate from the Department of Education in your country. You will find that Physics and Maths are ac tually quite similar and you can combine them well with each other. Physics is about understanding the world around us, while Maths deals with working out how things work and how we use them. To begin, you should start by studying one of the following subjects:Most Physics and Maths teacher usually choose Physics first as this is the most popular course to study. You can choose to study Maths as a second choice, but this is probably very difficult for people who want to become an astrophysicist or a meteorologist. Maths is easier as it is based on science while Physics can be based on pure fantasy. Physics is about understanding the properties of the world around us such as gravity, or rotational and circular motion, which can help us understand why we get sun, rain, clouds, fire and even the Earth's magnetic field. After completing the course, you can then study PhysicalProperties of Materials. This subject will mainly deal with the properties of metals, or alloys, of different mate rials, including plastics and ceramics. After you have completed your Physics and Maths teach course, you can then go on to study Physics under Physics Tutors. Tutors are also known as Physics Teachers, but they are actually called Physics Tutors and Science Tutors respectively. After graduating, you can then choose to go on to do a course that will enable you to study Physics and Chemistry. You will usually find a number of different schools in your country that offer a variety of degrees to help you do both Physics and Chemistry. A good school will usually give you a good idea of how much time you have to devote to studying these subjects because you will generally have a course that is very similar.

Where do they come from?Acrylic paints are a recent invention. Oil paints have also been around for about 500 years. The story of acrylic paint starts more recently.Synthetic paints first appeared in the 1930s in the United States of America. The paint was initially used to paint cars and buildings. However, some artists started using this paint for their works.Artists like Barnett Newman and Marris Louis used their paint mixed with turpentine to paint their works. The paint as we know it today was really invented in 1963. Online Volume of a Square Tutors
Online Volume of a Square Tutors A square is a 2-dimensional geometric shape which consists of 4 equal sides aligned perpendicular to each other. We can calculate the area of a square and the perimeter of a square, but in order to calculate the volume we need 3 dimensions and hence we cannot calculate the volume of a square. However, a cube is 3-dimensional structure which consists of 6 congruent square surfaces with equal sides. Therefore the volume of a cube can be calculated and it depends on the length of the square side. Example 1:What is the volume of the cube whose side length measures 9m? Given the side length of the cube, s = 9m A cube is formed by 6 square surfaces and volume of a cube is the measure of the space contained inside the cube. Volume of a cube, V = s3 Therefore volume of the given cube, V = (9m)3 This gives: Volume, V = 729m3 Therefore the volume of the cube whose side measures 9m is 729m3 Example 2: What is the volume of the cube whose side length measures 3m? Given the side length of the cube, s = 3m A cube is formed by 6 square surfaces and volume of a cube is the measure of the space contained inside the cube. Volume of a cube, V = s3 Therefore volume of the given cube, V = (3m)3 This gives: Volume, V = 27m3 Therefore the volume of the cube whose side measures 3m is 27m3
A Student Perspective on Harvard University
A Student Perspective on Harvard University Sam is a current senior at Harvard University. He is majoring in human biology, and specializes in life sciences tutoring, test prep tutoring, and a number of other subjects. Below, he shares his experience at Harvard University: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Sam: Harvard is a mix between urban and suburban. Cambridge is definitely not a suburb, but its also much less crowded than Boston, which is just across the river. Most of the undergrad buildings are around the Yard in Harvard Square, and you could get to most classes in a five- to 10-minute walk. The dorms are spread out, with shuttle services running to the furthest ones. The vast majority of undergrads dont have a car; you dont need it, and unless youre a resident of Cambridge, parking is difficult. A bike can definitely make life easier, though. Ive never felt unsafe on campus. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Sam:Generally, faculty are very available to meet with students. Most will provide weekly office hours. You are also free to arrange meetings with them at other times. TAs and advisors are always very accessible. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Sam:Dorms are guaranteed for all four years, so pretty much everyone lives in them. The houses tend to be very tight-knit communities that offer a lot of opportunities to socialize, such as intramural sports or house theater groups. Each house also has its own dining hall. The food is pretty mediocre, especially if youre a vegetarian. The rooms themselves are pretty variable. Some have been renovated in the last five years, while others look like they havent changed much since they were first built. The housing assignments are decided by lottery, with each house having its own specific method for assigning rooms. Generally, they all assign each student a random number, which gives a better or worse priority for choosing rooms. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Sam:The most dominant majors are computer science and economics, with social studies and various branches of the life sciences close behind. The amount of support you receive really depends on the department faculty. My major is human evolutionary biology, and we have two great undergrad advisors along with plenty of engaging professors and lecturers. I cant really speak about other departments, but in general, faculty tend to be very approachable and supportive. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Sam:As a freshman, it was pretty easy to meet people. Greek life has a presence, but sororities are a lot more important than fraternities on campus. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services? Sam:The Office of Career Services (OCS) puts on networking events every week, and theres a lot of exposure to employers. There are a number of career advisors with specific areas of expertise, such as nonprofits or the entertainment industry, who are available to meet one-on-one regularly. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Sam:Theres not really a student union; the closest thing we have would be the Science Center. Its fairly central, with rooms and open spaces to work in. The main undergrad library is Lamont, which is open 24 hours every day except for Friday and Saturday when it closes at 10 p.m. During midterms and finals, its always pretty crowded. There are other libraries available as well, which are usually more accessible. Most of them have some kind of caf. A lot of people just study in their dorms or dining halls, though. Usually, its easy to find an available space. Describe the surrounding town. Sam:Cambridge and Boston have plenty of things to do, but it can be expensive, especially going to shops and restaurants. A lot of students will go into the surrounding area for internships or other activities, but tend to socialize on campus. Having accessible unlimited food in the dining halls kind of reduces the incentive to leave campus. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Sam:I believe we have around 1,600 students per class year. Theres a wide variety of course sizes. Usually, youll take a number of large lecture courses, with 100 to 200 students, during freshman and sophomore years, as well as one or two smaller seminars, with less than 10 students. As you move into junior and senior years, this ratio shifts so that you end up in more seminars. Most big lecture courses also have smaller section components, where you meet in a group of 15-20 students and discuss the material with a graduate student. For the most part, I was happy with my class sizes. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Sam:My most memorable meeting with a professor was in the first few weeks of freshman year. I met with the teacher for my intro to college writing class to talk about a draft of an essay. I had been having a tough time adjusting to college, especially being surrounded by people who I felt no connection to in terms of interests, ambitions, and general personality. When she asked me how I was doing, I started crying. I was floored by the fact that she expressed even a casual interest in me as an individual, when it had felt like everyone around me was only interested in clubs, activities, internships, and job prospects. I doubt she was expecting it, but she understood the fact that I felt isolated, and helped me start to deal with it without feeling ashamed of it. I eventually took a gap year to pursue nonacademic interests, and came back with a much stronger, more focused state of mind. If I hadnt had somebody in a position of authority in academics show me that its ok to do my own th ing, it would have taken me a much longer time to get to that point. Corresponding Angles Worksheet
Corresponding Angles Worksheet Corresponding angles worksheet deals with problems based on angles. A straight line which cuts two or more lines at distinct points is called a transversal. Corresponding angles are pair of angles matching in corners. The corresponding angles are always congruent if a transversal intersects two parallel lines. Corresponding lines are mostly used to prove if lines are parallel. If angles are congruent (same) then the lines cut by a traversal are parallel. Corresponding angles are created when a traversal crosses parallel lines. Axiom of corresponding angles are given below 1. If a transversal cuts two parallel straight lines, then each pair of corresponding angles are equal. 2. Conversely, when a transversal cuts two straight lines and if a pair of corresponding angles are equal, then the straight lines are parallel. Example 1: Identify 2 pairs of corresponding angles from the given figure. Solution: From the figure line 3 crosses other two line 1 and 2 = We know that Corresponding angles are created when a traversal crosses parallel lines. = Corresponding angles are on the same side of line 3 (transversal) = Here, angle A and C are corresponding angles. = Also angle D and B are also corresponding angles. = These angles are always congruent. Example 2: Identify all the corresponding angles from the given figure Solution: From the figure line t crosses parallel line r and s = Corresponding angles are the angles that are created when a transversal crosses the parallel lines. = From the above given figure, = 1 and 5, 2 and 6, 4 and 8, 3 and 7 are corresponding angles.
